The briquette factory Louise in Domsdorf , a district of the southern Brandenburg town of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück in the Elbe-Elster district , is the oldest briquette factory in Europe and a technical monument .

history

In September 1882 the briquette factory Louise went into operation , in which in 1883 already over 150,000 hl. Raw lignite can be processed into briquettes. Initially, only two presses were set up for briquetting . Due to the steadily increasing demand for briquettes, extensive expansions were carried out. This enabled seven presses to be used for briquette production. In addition to the six plate dryers originally available , two tube dryers were necessary. The first alternator for power generation was put into operation in 1896.

In 1908 the first construction phase of the power plant shalle began, in 1924 and 1938 further construction phases followed until the building was completed in its current form. The daily output of the briquette factory was 360 t in 1938. When the Red Army marched in in 1945 it only came to a standstill for a few hours. The daily production of briquettes was increased to 584 t, although the water content was 20%. The last briquette was pressed on November 18, 1991 and on February 6, 1992, after 110 years of uninterrupted production, the briquette factory was shut down.

In September 1992 the briquette factory Louise was included in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg. The Association of Friends of Technical Monument Briquette Factory “Louise” e. V. was founded on September 2nd, 1994. The association members are dedicated to maintaining and establishing the functionality of the machines and technical systems. 500 meters as the crow flies is the Alwine settlement , where many of the employees of the briquette factory lived.
