Koninklijke Brill NV , or Brill for short , is an international Dutch science publisher and a company listed on Euronext Amsterdam N.V.

The publishing house was founded on May 17, 1683 by the bookseller Jordaan Luchtman (1652–1708) in Leiden , the Netherlands , where the company is still based today. The publisher has a branch in Boston ( USA ), therefore “Leiden / Boston” is the place of publication of all Brill publications. The turnover in 2016 was around 32 million euros . Brill employs around 120 people, publishes over 100 academic journals and around 500 new books and reference works every year.

The publisher specializes in international scientific publications in the following areas:

Among other things, Brill published the Encyclopaedia of Islam in English , French and German in 1913 , followed by a new edition in 1987 in English and French. The third edition, which will only appear in English, is currently being worked on.

Brill is one of the world's most renowned academic publishers and, through its own IDC Publishers branch, is also one of the most important online and microfilm providers of primary literature for scholars from the humanities and social sciences . All publications are therefore available in printed form, as microfilm / fiche and in electronic form.

In June 2014 Brill took over the Dutch publisher Rodopi . Since then, Rodopi has been an imprint of Brill. On January 1, 2017, the German publishers Ferdinand Schöningh and Wilhelm Fink were also taken over by Brill.
