Brilliant Island is a tussock- overgrown island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is located east of Plymouth Island halfway between Chaplin Head and Romerof Head . It is home to a colony of giant petrels .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the Royal Navy frigate HMS Brilliant , which was deployed in the Falklands War in April 1982 to retake South Georgia after the invasion by the armed forces of Argentina .
