Plymouth Island is a tussock- covered island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is located west of Brilliant Island and east of Chaplin Head . It is home to a colony of giant petrels .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the Royal Navy frigate HMS Plymouth , which was used in the Falklands War in April 1982 to retake South Georgia after the invasion by the armed forces of Argentina .
