Brittle diabetes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term brittle diabetes ( brittle means "unstable" or "fragile") is used to describe diabetes mellitus with an unstable metabolism and strong blood sugar fluctuations. It is not a separate form of diabetes; the term is still used by some doctors, albeit out of date.

According to the American Diabetes Association , brittle diabetes is "a condition in which blood sugar levels fluctuate," and typically affects people with type 1 diabetes.

Brittle diabetes requires intensive diabetological monitoring, with treatment depending on the causes of the fluctuations. Diabetic sequelae are favored if the metabolism is poor.
