Coordinates: 31 ° 57 ′ S , 141 ° 27 ′ E The City of Broken Hill is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 170.1 km² and has about 17,700 inhabitants. It is located in Picton Parish, Yancowinna County .
Broken Hill is located in the far west of the state about 1,200 km west of the metropolis of Sydney in the middle of the Unincorporated Far West, a very sparsely populated area without its own local administration. The city consists of eight hamlets and towns: Alma, Broken Hill Central, Broken Hill North, Broken Hill Railwaytown, Broken Hill South, Broken Hill West, Yanco Glen and most of Broken Hill . The Shire Council is based in Broken Hill.

In 2004, twelve members of the Broken Hill City Council were elected by residents of the LGA, eleven councilors and one chairman and mayor. Broken Hill is not divided into districts. In 2006 it was decided to reduce the number of council members by two to ten in future.
In late 2006, the state government launched an investigation into the council's official business, and on January 10, 2007, an administrator was entrusted with running the LGA. He will remain in office until the new elections at the end of 2009.
