history

Broomhall Castle was built in 1874 by John Foukes and Frances Mackison on behalf of James Johnstone . In 1906 the owner got into economic difficulties and sold the property to an Italian riding school. In 1910 it became the Clifford Park Boys Prep School .

The building caught fire in 1941 when boarding school students were in a tent camp on the property. Despite the efforts of the Alloa Fire Brigade , the building burned down. It was a spectacular sight when the roof collapsed and sent a shower of sparks skyward.

Broomhall Castle remained in ruins until 1985. Then it was rebuilt and converted into a nursing home . In 2003 the current owners bought the castle and turned it into a small hotel with 16 rooms, a restaurant and a lounge.
