A brochure (plural: brochures) is a printed product in which a (originally) stapled or (today often) glued book block has a mostly flexible cardboard cover attached or directly glued to it. The brochure is in contrast to the bound book, in which the book block is joined with a book cover . The word brochure is derived from the French verb brocher (“spear”, “pierce”), which is derived from broche (“ brooch ”). The term is a reminder that this type of binding was originally only an interim binding , which the buyer usually had later replaced by a higher-quality binding according to his own taste. In the 18th and 19th centuries, paperback volumes were also sold without a cover. The bond lay in the decision of the buyer. Books with a publisher's cover , ie uniform bindings already produced by the publisher, did not appear until the middle of the 19th century.

In the case of books, a brochure or softcover (English paperback as well as softcover ) is now a high-quality edition with a soft cardboard cover . Single-ply brochures

Single-ply brochures are compiled from several, unfolded sheets (placed one on top of the other) or from several folded sheets inserted one inside the other (one layer). They can be wire-stitched to the side (or, in the case of collected folded sheets: wire backstitch stitched), bound with a spiral, rings, a cord or with glue ( adhesive binding ). Single sheet brochures are used for invoice pads and calendars , e.g. B. College block .

Multi-ply brochures

In contrast to single-layer brochures, these are made of several layers . Several layers are placed on top of one another and milled off on the back. Then the book block is fanned out on both sides by means of a Lumbeck device or an adhesive binder , glue is applied and finally an envelope is attached with glue. There are also multi-ply brochures without this cover, but these are not in use. There are also brochures whose layers are stapled. One speaks of thread-sewn brochure. This corresponds to the previous interim brochure.

It consists of unfolded single sheets. This means that different types of paper or materials can follow one another.

Types of brochures

Soft brochure (simple brochure)

Brochure with 4-fold (also 2-fold possible) grooved cover. A cardboard envelope is placed around the book block . This is the simplest and most frequently used type of brochure, which is used, for example, for paperbacks or for short-lived, inexpensive jobs.

English paperback

A brochure with an unprinted cardboard envelope, around which a printed dust jacket is wrapped, which has folded flaps at the front and back. The dust jacket is usually glued to the cardboard cover on the back. This somewhat more elaborate brochure design can be found in bibliophile works, commemorative publications, etc.

French brochure (wide flap brochure)

A printed cardboard cover is glued around a printed, perfect-bound or thread-sewn book block , which has an inwardly folded flap at both the front and back.

Rigid brochure (library brochure)

The stiff brochures are an intermediate form of the soft or cardboard publisher's brochure and the semi-woven or full-fabric tape. A double attachment without fabric fold is sufficient . There is no need for pressing or gluing, the cardboard covers are laminated to the attachment . The thickness of the gray bookbinding board depends on the thickness of the book. Swiss brochure

In the case of the Swiss brochure , the book block is bordered on the spine with a fabric strip. The outer cardboard cover does not stick to the spine of the book block, but with a narrow strip on the last page (green in the illustration). This significantly improves the opening behavior of the brochure. The Swiss brochure belongs to the group of lay-flat brochures .

Integral brochure

Integral brochure , also known as flexo brochure, is a mixture of hardcover and brochure and looks more like a hardcover. It has folded edges and a back that opens when it is opened. It has no additional reinforcing cardboard and no back insert . The blanket consists of a single wrapped, rather flexible cardboard cover. The ceiling edges protrude like a hardcover. The integral brochure can be provided with a header, headband and bookmark.
