Bruce Aylward

Bruce Aylward (* before 1960 in St. John's ) is a Canadian doctor and epidemiologist. He was in the context of Covid-19 pandemic as co-head of the joint mission of the World Health Organization and China appointed to combat the coronavirus disease. He received particular attention for breaking off an interview with independent journalists on why the WHO had ignored Taiwan's timely warnings of a possible pandemic.

Life

Aylwar received his PhD from Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1985 .

Covid-19 interview controversy

When asked about the WHO's ignoring Taiwan's warnings of Covid-19, Aylward broke off an interview with a Hong Kong journalist in March 2020.

In April 2020, the Health Committee of the Canadian Parliament voted unanimously in favor of Aylward's subpoena. The subpoena followed two declined invitations to take part in a telephone interview. Conservative health critic Matt Jeneroux said in this context: "The Canadian government has repeatedly consulted the WHO as a guide for decisions on the protection of Canada. A Canadian who works in an important WHO post should be transparent about the information available and explain which factors influence the thinking of the organization ". The WHO appointed Aylward as a member of its Global Leadership Committee in Geneva .
