Barbara Grubenmann , known as «Schweizerbabele», (born February 5, 1767 in Teufen AR ; † 1817 ; entitled to live in Teufen) was a Swiss separatist from Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Barbara Grubenmann was a daughter of Jakob Grubenmann and Barbara Tobler. Around 1800 she was briefly married to Johann Ulrich Mohn, a cobbler from Wigoltingen.

Grubenmann was the leading figure of the pietistic separatist movement in Appenzell Ausserrhoden , which was in contradiction to the official church. At the center of her conviction was the restoration of all things after the purification of souls in the underworld, i.e. the doctrine of all-reconciliation . According to Eberhard Fritz, she " caused a tremendous sensation not only because of her trance states , but because she founded her teachings biblically and probably also worked through her personality." Persecuted by the authorities, she sat in Lindau prison on Lake Constance from 1789 to 1792 .

She later worked as the intellectual head of the separatists in Rottenacker , whose movement radiated across Upper Swabia . Known as the «Schweizererbabele», Barbara Grubenmann died shortly before her followers emigrated to the United States and founded the community settlement of Zoar in Ohio .

Only a few years of her life are documented in terms of sources before they are lost again.
