Muriel Casals i Couturier (born April 6, 1945 in Avignon , † February 14, 2016 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish - French economist , university professor and Catalan politician .

Career

Casals was born as the daughter of the Catalan politician and writer Lluís Casals García during his exile in France, her sister, who was almost seven years younger, was the literary scholar and historian Montserrat Casals . In 1969 she graduated with a licentiate from the University of Barcelona , and in 1981 she received her doctorate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona . There she remained part of the academic staff and rose to professor . Her main focus was on economic development, including the European Economic Area and the role of women in it. As a columnist for El Temps and Catalunya Informació, she popularized her views.

In March 2010, Casals took over from Jordi Porta as the first woman to head the Òmnium Cultural organization , which subsequently became increasingly political. The organization played a key role in the Catalan independence movement, which led to an enormous influx of members. In July, she announced her departure to run for the newly formed electoral alliance Junts pel Sí for the Catalan parliamentary elections in September 2015 , and temporarily handed over the reins to Quim Torra . After the election she was one of the 62 MPs in the alliance, making it the largest parliamentary group in Catalonia's parliament .

On January 30, 2016, Casals was the victim of a bicycle accident in which she sustained serious head injuries, the consequences of which she succumbed two weeks later in the Hospital Clínico y Provincial de Barcelona . A short time later she was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya .
