Bruckenthal is a former German settlement in western Ukraine . It is located near the border with Poland , about 50 kilometers north of the city of Lviv and today belongs to the territory of the village of Chlivchany , which is located southwest of the city of Bels .

The place was founded in 1786 by Emperor Joseph II and was settled by Germans, most of whom came from the Palatinate . Today only the largely destroyed local cemetery still exists. There is a cross on a hill in the center of the village. The wooden church was once located there.

The origin of the place name Bruckenthal is unclear. There are different views on this. Accordingly, the name should be derived from the bridges over which the access roads to the village led. Scientifically justified, however, the naming by Samuel von Brukenthal , director of the Transylvanian court chancellery in Vienna and 1774 governor of Transylvania.

As early as the 19th century, various families from Bruckenthal emigrated mainly to North America. Their descendants are now scattered across the United States and Canada . Probably the most famous person with roots in Bruckenthal is the former Prime Minister of Manitoba and Governor General of Canada, Edward Schreyer . His mother's parents came from Bruckenthal.
