The Bruckner memorial in Steyr was unveiled in 1898, making it the oldest memorial for the composer . The design comes from Fritz Zerritsch the Elder , who used a Bruckner bust by Viktor Tilgner for it. It is located on Bruckner-Platz near the parish church and is a listed building .

On a rectangular granite pillar, which in turn stands on a pedestal, is an upper body bust of Anton Bruckner. ANTON / BRUCKNER is written in metal letters on the front of the pillar . Two bronze putti are placed on the base : the one on the left is holding a laurel wreath to Bruckner , while the one on the right is holding a lyre with one hand and sheet music with the other. There is also a bronze wreath on the pillar and a theater mask, flowers and ribbons on the base. On the left is a small organ, on the right a plaque reminding of a renovation in 1935: Erected 1898 / Renewed 1935 / VON / BRUCKNER / VEREHRERN / DER / STADT STEYR .

history

Prominent citizens of Steyr founded a committee on November 23, 1896 to erect a Bruckner monument. By the end of 1897, 2510 fl and 95 kr had been collected. Carl Almeroth , who was friends with Bruckner, bought a bust of Bruckner from Viktor Tilgner. The design for the monument and therefore also for the ornamentation came from Tilgner's student Fritz Zerritsch the Elder. On the occasion of the IX. The monument was unveiled on May 29, 1898 at the Salzburg-Upper Austrian National Singers Festival. Fritz Zerritsch renovated the monument in 1935. A plaque on the right commemorates this renovation. It was dismantled during the Second World War and re-erected in September 1945. It is listed as an Anton Bruckner monument in the list of the Federal Monuments Office .
