The Brumer Islands are a group of islands in the Coral Sea . Politically, they belong to the Milne Bay province in the southeastern area of Papua New Guinea . The islands are located off the southeast coast of New Guinea , 10 km from the South Cape.

Badila Bedda Bedda Bonarua (2.49 km²), also called West Brumer Island, is the westernmost island in the group. Bonarua is long and narrow, the island stretches for 14 km from northeast to southwest. It is densely forested with coconut palms and other trees. The soil is fertile. Bananas and sugar cane are grown in large, fenced fields . There is a beacon on the highest point in the west of the island, at 120 m. Harikoia, the second largest island (1.32 km²) is east of Badila Bedda Bedda Bonarua, it is up to 165 m high. The other islands in the group, including Ahana Rock, are located southeast of Harikoia.

At the time of the 2000 census, the population of the only village on the main island, Bonarua, was 160.

history

The first Europeans were the Spaniards of the expedition of Luís Vaz de Torres , who mapped the islands in the summer of 1606 as Mira Como Vas (Eng. "Look how you go.").
