Abies durangensis is a species of conifer from the genus of firs ( Abies ). The natural distribution area is in northern Mexico.

description

Abies durangensis grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 20 to 40 meters and diameters of up to 150 centimeters at chest height . The long branches descend horizontally from the straight trunk. The crown is almost conical to irregularly round. Young trees have smooth, gray or reddish brown colored bark . In old trees it is deeply furrowed and divided into oblong panels. It has a black-brown color. The furrowed, smooth or sparsely hairy twig bark is purple-red to red-brown in color. It has round or egg-shaped leaf scars .

The elongated, egg-shaped buds are 4 to 5 millimeters long. They are surrounded by a pink-yellow layer of resin . The needles, which are blunt or rounded at the tip, are 1.4 to 4.5 centimeters long and 1 to 1.6 millimeters wide. They are colored light green on the top of the needle and blue-green on the underside of the needle. There are two rows of white stomas on the underside of the needle .

The male cones in the leaf axils are 1 to 2 centimeters long. The upright, almost cylindrical cones are 5 to 10 centimeters long and 3 to 4.5 centimeters thick. They stand on a short stem. When ripe, they are pale yellow to medium brown in color. The resinous, yellow seed becomes 6 to 8 millimeters long. Each seed has a 7 to 10 millimeter long, orange-yellow wing.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Abies durangensis is in Mexico. It extends in the south from northern Jalisco via Sinaloa and Durango in the north to Chihuahua and northwestern Coahuila .

Abies durangensis is a species of tree with a damp and cool climate. It grows at altitudes from 1600 to 2900 meters. Well-ventilated rubble heaps and lithosols , less often moist ravine soils are populated.

There are mostly mixed stands with the Mexican cypress ( Cupressus lusitanica ), the alligator juniper ( Juniperus deppeana ), the Chihuahua spruce ( Picea chihuahuana ), Pinus durangensis , Pinus leiophylla , Pinus strobiformis and the Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ).

Systematics

Abies durangensis is assigned to the Grandes section within the genus of firs ( Abies ) . It was first described in 1942 by Maximino Martínez in "Anales del Instituto de Biología de la Universidad Nacional de México", Volume 13, Page 621.

Varieties

Abies durangensis is mostly divided into two varieties :

  • Abies durangensis var. Coahuilensis (IM Johnst.) Martínez occurs only in the extreme northwest of Coahuila . It only grows there in two river valleys. In contrast to the type variety, it usually remains smaller and has shorter needles. The twig bark is also more densely hairy and the needles have fewer stomata. A synonym is Abies coahuilensis I.M. Johnst.
  • Abies durangensis var. Durangensis is the type variety (Syn .: Abies neodurangensis Debreczy, I.Rácz & RM Salazar ): It occurs from northern Mexico to northern Jalisco .

Hazard and protection

Abies durangensis is listed as “not at risk” on the IUCN Red List . The var. Coahuilensis is classified as "endangered" due to its small distribution area. However, there is no known threat to the population. For both varieties, however, it is pointed out that a new risk assessment is necessary.
