The fountain art is a striking building in the west of Arnstadt , which served the water supply of the city from 1559 to 1900 (historically: " water art "). It is located on the old city wall near the Liebfrauenkirche .

history

The original building had been part of the virgin monastery (Benedictine nuns) at the Liebfrauenkirche since 1412 and was used as a parsonage and visitor house ("conclavi virginum" - chamber of the virgins). A water wheel was first mentioned in 1540 and a new building was erected four years later. After the secularization , the city bought the building in 1559. It was now used to supply water to the entire upper city. In 1876 the house was rebuilt in the style of historicism and an additional floor was added. After the commissioning of the new waterworks in Arnstadt-Schönbrunn in 1900, the house was used for other purposes, first as a calibration office and then until 1964 as a dairy business. Since the renovation in 1980 it has been used as a residential building.

Water supply

The water supply to the fountain art was carried out by the "Zahme Weisse" (also called "Kelle"), a brook or open ditch that was fed by the Wilden Weisse and has supplied the city since 1347. The water initially flowed along Schönbrunnstrasse to Hohen Bleiche and under this street to the “Brunnenkunst”. Here the water was lifted into the elevated tank with a bucket wheel, which supplied the most important wells in the upper town and ensured the town's drinking water supply. After passing the fountain art, the Zahmer Weisse ditch then ran in the area of today's streets Obere Weisse and An der Weisse , where it also served to supply industry, before the outflow was via the Wilde Weisse into the Gera .

With the commissioning of the waterworks in Schönbrunn and the Alteburg water tower in 1900, the Zahmer Weisse rift system lost its importance and was built over. In order to secure the water supply, the new water tower was built on the Arnsberg in 1928.
