Bruno (novella)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bruno is a novella by Gerhard Falkner that was published on May 26, 2008 by Berlin Verlag . It was named after the nickname of the brown bear JJ1 , who stayed in the Bavarian-Austrian border area in the summer of 2006.

action

The first-person narrator, a German writer from Berlin, travels to Leuk in the Valais in Switzerland. He takes from the local newspapers that the brown bear Bruno has also been spotted in Upper Valais. The narrator soon feels the need to meet the bear. An absurd search develops, enriched with bizarre encounters. At first glance, a narrative of nature is being delivered, which is mixed with a description of the mood in Switzerland in the football fever of the 2006 World Cup . Going deeper, however, the novella is a psychogram of the first-person narrator who suffers a crisis of meaning. The search for the bear becomes a metaphor for the narrator's search for himself, the shooting of the bear becomes a metaphor for failure on all levels.

Relation to the real bear JJ1

Falkner relocates the bear's hiking route from the Bavarian-Austrian border area to Switzerland and the location of the launch near Leuk in Valais. However, he leaves other historical details unchanged, especially the date of the shooting (June 26, 2006).

reception

The novella was well received by the German feature pages.

Award

The German Literature Fund awarded Gerhard Falkner the 2008 Kranichstein Literature Prize, endowed with 20,000 euros, for his complete lyric works and the novella "Bruno" .
