Frazzi at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena . He earned diplomas in the subjects of composition, piano, vocal polyphony, choral music and choral singing. From 1938 he taught at the Conservatory of Milan, where he held a chair for composition between 1957 and 1979. His students included u. a. C. Abbado, Bruno Canino, Azio Corghi, F. Degrada, Arman Gentilucci, R. Muti, and M. Pollini. In 1990 the Associazione Nazionale die Critici Musicali awarded him the Premio Massimo Mila for his teaching activities . Bettinelli won numerous prizes (including Angelicum , 1942 and 1947, Borgonuovo , 1948, Città di Bologna , 1964, Città di Trieste , 1964) and was a member of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He was also active as a music critic.

While Bettinelli initially tied in with the work of Paul Hindemith in his works - this is shown in strict, predominantly contrapuntal compositions such as Due invenzioni (1939) or Fantasia e fuga su temi gregoriani (1942) - appear in his later work, although he has always taken a detached stance towards the progressive currents of contemporary music, atonal influences and finally the use of dodecaphonic rows (although exempt from specific and binding rules). The energetic rhythm and contrapuntal spelling are also characteristic of his musical language. The continuous interest in experiments by the avant-garde undeniably imparted a tonal and harmonic modernity to his music as well as a continuous expansion of the musical material.
