The Brunswick plant-Export GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Zwischenahn is one of the largest nurseries in Europe. She is particularly specialized in the area of large plants and export.

history

In 1876 Diedrich-Gerhard Bruns (1853–1925) founded a nursery. His son Johann Bruns (1876–1957) took over the business in 1900 and expanded it into a tree nursery based on the model of the large Dutch tree nursery center Boskoop . In 1928 the eldest of his three sons, Erich Bruns (1905–1989), joined the company, and a first branch was opened in Gristede . In 1937 Wilhelm Bruns (1912–2003) joined the company and began selling plants across the region.

After the end of World War II , all tree nursery crops had to be cleared on the orders of the Allied occupation in order to grow food there instead. Reconstruction began in 1946, and from the 1960s the export branch in particular grew strongly and made Bruns known nationwide under the name "German Export Tree Nursery". The cultivation of container plants began in the mid-1970s. In 1977, Johann Diedrich ("Jan-Dieter") Bruns joined the company in the fourth generation.

In 1997 the administration building and logistics center was rebuilt.

Today's structure

Today, around 300 employees grow over 4,000 plant species and varieties on more than 500 hectares. Bruns is particularly known for its large trees, with a trunk circumference of up to 1.20 m and more, a stature height of up to 14 m and a crown width of up to 8 m. The operative business is divided into two divisions, "Plants for gardening and landscaping " and "Plants for garden centers ", each with its own sales and service system.

Many IT solutions in the industry (e.g. garden planning programs) are based on the master data of the Bruns range catalog, which is widely used in industry circles.

Awards and honors

The Johann-Bruns-Allee in Bad Zwischenahn was named after the founder. In October 1992 senior partner Wilhelm Bruns was honored with the highest award in German horticulture, the Georg Arends commemorative coin.

Rhododendron Park

A few kilometers from the headquarters, the Bruns company operates a freely accessible rhododendron park in the Gristeder Forest . Around 1000 rhododendrons and free-range azaleas are presented on a total of 15 hectares. In addition to its function as a local recreation area, the park also serves to present one's own breeding successes. The collection of home-grown rhododendrons currently includes around 150 varieties.
