Georg Arends

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Adalbert Arends (born September 21, 1863 in Essen , † March 5, 1952 in Wuppertal ) was a German plant breeder and gardener . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Arends ".

Live and act

Arends bred several new types of flowers , especially perennials, and was a co-founder of the organization of modern horticulture . In 1888, in the Wuppertal district of Ronsdorf , he founded the art and commercial gardening Arends perennial nursery , which specialized in the breeding and cultivation of perennials and is therefore the first and oldest German perennial nursery . Arends died in Wuppertal-Ronsdorf in 1952.

World-famous varieties, which are still in the retail range 100 years later, found their origin in the nursery. His "Astilbe-Arendsii" hybrids , i.e. purple lances , which were named after him and are represented in many German gardens, are known.

Succession

The nursery is owned by his great-granddaughter Anja Maubach, who continues to cultivate and develop the tradition of perennial nursery in the spirit of Georg Arend. According to Winfried Rusch, Anja Maubach studied garden architecture at the Freising-Weihenstephan campus and works as a garden planner. She has a visiting professorship at Leibniz University in Hanover and has been offering gardening seminars since 1993.
