Name and composition

Domovina culture house , in which the 5th party congress of the CPC took place

The name "Buben von Karlín" is an informal name for the group around Gottwald. It is derived from the Karlín district of Prague, where the KPTsch secretariat was located and where Gottwald worked. Originally it was used by the founder of the party Bohumír Šmeral and the older generation of the old party leadership to question the early age of Gottwald's supporters somewhat maliciously. Later, the name was general and was used to designate the functionaries who initiated and operated the Bolshevization of the party.

In addition to Gottwald, the group included Rudolf Slánský , Jan Šverma , Václav Kopecký , Jaromír Dolanský , Viliam Široký , Pavel Reiman , Bruno Köhler and others.

history

The CPC, which was only formed in 1921 through a split from the Social Democrats, retained its relative independence from the CPSU, which was met with criticism from Moscow. Gottwald, who orientated himself strongly to Stalin's person, resolved to bring the party on a line loyal to Moscow. An opportunity arose in February 1929 at the 5th party congress of the CPch, which was convened hastily and without real notice. With the help of his followers, he took over the party leadership and was elected to the Central Committee, Politburo and General Secretary. This was followed by a course of Stalinization within the party, commonly known as Bolshevization.

The Czech historian Ladislav Niklíček said of the group that they placed the decisions of the Comintern above the interests of the Czechoslovak state.
