Bookland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buchland ( English : Bookland ) is an artificial word for a special meaning of the first three digits of a 13-digit EAN .

The EAN of a book, which is identical to the 13-digit ISBN , is also called "Bookland EAN" or "Bookland EAN", as an EAN usually begins with the country of registration of the article .

In all books, these three digits are 978 or 979, regardless of the place of publication. It is therefore said that these articles were registered in the country of books or book country . Only after these first three digits of the ISBN-13 / EAN-13 is an ISBN group number (1 to 5 digits) that specify the place of publication or the language area of the book.

The number combination 979 has only been used since January 1, 2007. The background to this is the almost completely exhausted number range of the previous 10-digit ISBN (now called ISBN-10). The 13-digit ISBN (ISBN-13 or EAN-13) beginning with 979 can no longer be assigned to an ISBN-10 in contrast to those beginning with 978 .
