GS1 country prefix
The GS1 country prefix is now only referred to as the GS1 prefix . This unique character string with two or more digits is assigned by GS1 to the national GS1 member organization so that it can use this to assign GS1 basic numbers to companies. A GS1 prefix can also be assigned to a specific application by GS1 (see table).
The GS1 basic number (and thus implicitly the GS1 prefix) is a mandatory component of GS1 identification numbers, such as the GTIN or the SSCC .
The main purpose of the GS1 prefix is the decentralized administration of GS1 identification numbers. These numbers show the national GS1 member organization with which a company's GS1 basic number was assigned, but not where, for example, a product - marked with a GTIN - was manufactured. The GS1 prefixes can therefore not be understood as "marks of origin".
