The GS1 system leads the way in retail . It is also used in other industries. The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is known in the EAN barcode, which can be found on all retail products and can be scanned in order to automate checkout processes and other processes . The global location number , with which locations , e.g. branches , warehouses , berths, etc., can be identified, is also widely used . In the field of medical devices , GS1 is an issuing agency ( IAC) designated by the European Commission and the FDA for the unique device identification (product identification number ).
With the GS1 system, unique identification keys can be generated across all industries for almost all objects that are relevant in business-to-business , business-to-consumer and business-to-government business, such as products, locations, companies , Assets or transactions. The efficiency , security, transparency and sustainability of the physical and digital added value are to be improved in this way.
history
Global
The GS1 system originally comes from the USA . Since 1969 there have been considerations there to introduce a cross-sector product code. In 1973 the preparatory work was finished and the design of the linear barcode was fixed, the Universal Product Code (UPC) was introduced. A year later, a pack of chewing gum was scanned for the first time at a till. The success of this system motivated the establishment of the European Article Numbering Association in 1977 , later renamed EAN International and then in 2005 GS 1 . That of the European Article Numbering Association promoted EAN-13 code was complete with the UPC compatible .
After six years of development, a standard for electronic data exchange was published in 1989 . A year later, the American people responsible for the UPC and the European EAN organizers agreed an agreement for the joint further development of global identification standards. Since 1995 standards for the healthcare system have also been developed. In 1999, the Reduced Space Symbology was published for a new barcode group, which was renamed GS1 DataBar in 2007 .
In 2004 the first standard for RFID technology was published. Three years later, the development of open standards began, giving consumers direct access to important product information. From 2005, EAN International changed its name to GS1. The UCC , the American standardization organization for the consumer goods industry, had previously become a member.
German-speaking area
EAN Austria was founded in 1977. Eleven years later the organization was spun off from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and organized as a separate GmbH . As part of the international standardization of brand policy and company name , the organization has been called GS1 Austria since 2005 .
In Germany , the Central Office for Coorganization (CCG) was established in 1974 , in which representatives from industry and trade worked together. This EAN organization was also renamed GS1 Germany in 2005 . The Markenverband and the EHI Retail Institute are shareholders to this day . From 2003 onwards “the company developed from a pure standardization organization to a market-oriented service company”.
In Switzerland , GS1 Switzerland was created in early 2005 from the merger of the three associations EAN Switzerland , Swiss Society for Logistics and ECR Switzerland .

Industry sectors
GS1 is primarily concerned with optimizing value creation. For decades, the focus has been on improving cooperation across individual companies and branches. The global standards are traditionally used by retailers and companies that manufacture fast moving consumer goods . In the meantime, however, players in the healthcare sector, in the railway sector, in the automotive industry , in mechanical and plant engineering and in logistics are also making use of corresponding offers.
subjects
Specifically, it is about the development and adaptation of globally unique identification and coding systems for objects along the value chain or networks such as articles, shipping units , services, addresses, locations, etc., including the relevant processes. These are mainly barcode systems, category management , strategies and procedures for efficient consumer response , the harmonization and improvement of article master data , RFID, and traceability and sustainability.
Forecasts and Studies
The prognosis and design of future trends and challenges is also part of the task area. In 2009, for example , GS1 Germany opened a knowledge center for this purpose , which was expanded to include a future laboratory in 2014 and converted in 2017. GS1 also publishes corresponding studies with a similar intention. They complete the spectrum of investigations carried out or commissioned by the customer , for example on gaps in shelves , electronic data exchange, transport container systems, disaster safety , mobile phones when shopping or traceability. Practical tests are also part of the range of services offered by GS1, such as the use of blockchain technology when exchanging pallets or with the digital waybill .
Awards ceremonies
GS1 organizes competitions in order to increase awareness of topics that are considered important and to recognize exemplary initiatives. GS1 Austria promotes the maintenance and sharing of article master data with the GS1 Sync Star Award . The ECR Award is given in Germany.
