Bahía de Guantánamo
The Bahía de Guantánamo ( Spanish for Bay of Guantánamo ) is a 20 kilometers inland and up to eight kilometers wide bay of the Caribbean Sea in the southern part of Cuba . It bears the name of the city of Guantánamo, twelve kilometers to the north .
In the bay of Guantánamo there is a natural harbor which , due to the great depth of the water, can also be approached by submarines and large ships.
In the German-speaking area, the English name of the bay, " Guantanamo Bay ", is mostly associated with the US military's lease area , the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base , on the southern part of the bay , and the prison camp established there in 2002 . The area of around 117 km² has been leased by the USA since 1903 , but the legal status is a point of contention between Cuba and the United States: Cuba demands the return of the property.
