Agriculture in Buhera District

Buhera is a small town and a rural district of the eastern highlands of 5,369.23 km² with 203,739 inhabitants (1992) in the Manicaland Province in Zimbabwe . The place is near the road from Chivhu to Chipinge .

The district was once a productive agricultural area. Since the expropriation of white farmers, it has been one of the problem areas of the country, where malnutrition is a dominant issue. The collapse of commercial agriculture has caused the harvests to drop to a quarter of the previous amount in 2005 and 2006, instead of 2.4 million tons, only 600,000. In addition, the Buhera district is populated by followers of an Apostolic Sect who reject medical treatment. When cholera broke out at the beginning of 2006 because uncovered wells were contaminated by rainwater, the number of victims was very high.
