The Ice Age game reserve Neandertal is a 23 hectare game reserve founded in 1935 in the Neandertal .

The animals that live in the game enclosure , Heck cattle , Heck horses and bison have natural development opportunities. These animal species also lived here at the time of the Neanderthals and were his prey, with Heck cattle and Heck horse being farm animals , which are each supposed to represent their extinct wild forms . Since the game reserve is located in the Neandertal nature reserve, other wild animals such as gray herons , tree hawks , dormice and others can also be observed.

The walking paths around the game reserve are available all year round free of charge. An hour long circular route leads along the enclosure to the Stone Age workshop near the Neanderthal Museum . The Düssel and the Hofheider Bach flow through the game reserve .

The Zweckverband Wildgehege Neandertal is the operator of the game reserve. Members of the association are the cities of Düsseldorf , Wuppertal , Mettmann , Haan and Erkrath , the Mettmann district and the Neandertal nature conservation association, which owns the animals.
