description
The Buittle Bridge, a few hundred meters west of Dalbeattie, replaced an older two-arched bridge. This was a short distance upstream and fell victim to a flood a few years after completion.
The Buittle Bridge, built in 1797, leads the A711 over Urr Water . It spans the river with a single, approximately 27 m wide, flat, brick-lined segment arch . Considering the year of manufacture, the range is remarkable. Its wall is made of roughly hewn blocks quarried stone . Brick parapets delimit the roadway. They have since been rebuilt and close with natural stone caps. On the east side, they are still a long way along the road beyond the bridge. Its course describes a hump on the bridge.
