Horst Naumann (Linguist)

Horst Naumann (born November 20, 1925 in Grimma ; † November 28, 2015 there ) was a German linguist , language historian and name researcher . In recognition of his work, Naumann was given honorary citizenship of the city of Grimma.

Life

Horst Naumann went to school in Grimma, survived the war with subsequent French imprisonment (1943–1948) and graduated from high school in Grimma in 1949. He studied at the University of Leipzig German and was from 1953 to 1957 teacher at the high school Grimma.

From 1956 to 1962 Naumann was an assistant at the University of Leipzig , from 1962 at the Pedagogical University of Zwickau , where he taught until his retirement. In 1958 he was awarded a Dr. phil. doctorate (topic: "The place and field names of the Grimma and Wurzen districts" ) and in 1968 there for Dr. phil. habil. Habilitation (subject: "The rural German microtoponymy of the Meißnian linguistic landscape. A linguistic contribution to microtoponymy from East Central German based on the microtoponymy of the districts of Döbeln, Grossenhain, Meißen, Oschatz and Riesa" ). In 1974 he was appointed professor in Leipzig.

The Germanist has been researching the place and field names of the Muldental since 1958, and later also large parts of Saxony; he dealt extensively with Grimma's street and family names. His little book of first names and his book of family names made Horst Naumann known nationwide.

After his retirement from 1991, Naumann worked as a contract teacher at the St. Augustin High School in Grimma and taught Latin.

In 1992 Naumann was elected as the first representative of the new federal states to the board of the Society for German Language . Since 2002 he has been an honorary member. In 2010 the city of Grimma made him an honorary citizen.

Naumann spoke several languages. Up until old age he answered inquiries from all over the world about the origins of names.

Scientific activity

He taught at the "Ernst Schneller" college of education in Zwickau and taught future German teachers.

From 1964 to 1989, Horst Naumann was the head of the Chair for Linguistics / German at the University of Leipzig .

From 1992 to 2002 Naumann was a member of the entire board of the Society for the German Language , then an honorary member.

  • On November 29, 2010, Grimma honored Horst Naumann with honorary citizenship of the city of Grimma.
  • A school building at Grimmas Gymnasium St. Augustin is called Horst-Naumann-Haus .

Private

Horst Naumann was married to Margarete Naumann. The couple have five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
