Location of the Bumpfuhl in Heiligensee

The Bumpfuhl is a wetland in the Berlin district of Heiligensee in the Reinickendorf district on the north-western outskirts of Berlin. It is located north of the reserve of the European Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive and part of the transnational system of protected areas Natura 2000 protected tree mountains . It is protected as an extensive natural monument.

The Bumpfuhl is a naturally formed wetland area in the terminal moraine area of the Barnim and lies in the middle of the area south of the Heiligensee district, which is largely used as an agricultural area. Around 1893, parts of the area were drained by filling up sand from the neighboring inland dune area. As a result of the efforts of the citizens' initiative “Save the Fields” in 1983, the area was placed under protection on May 17, 1985, “in order to preserve the communities and habitats of wild plants and animals that are typical of wetlands. It is also protected because of its beauty and its importance for the landscape. "
