Franz Staudigl (born March 27, 1885 in Vienna , † April 10, 1944 in Passau ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

From 1899–1903 he did an apprenticeship at the cooperative of upholsterers in Vienna. In 1903 he joined the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna. From 1904 to 1910 he was visiting the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1908 he received a landscape scholarship from the academy for a trip to the Bohemian Forest and a visit to the city of Passau. In 1912/13 he became acquainted with Ernst Wahliss, the owner of a large porcelain house in Vienna, and received design commissions for faience and porcelain. In 1914 he moved to Passau, in 1920 he married Adolfine Exner, with whom he traveled to Holland and Northern Germany in 1921 to visit the museums in Rotterdam and Haarlem. His grave was in the Ilzstadt cemetery (now abandoned) in Passau.

style

Throughout his life, Franz Staudigl was a stubborn artist who orientated himself primarily on the old masters, especially the great Dutch, and who had always refused to be identified by critics as an impressionist, for example. Inspired by Adalbert Stifter's "Hochwald", shaped by trips to Bohemia, the Netherlands and Northern Germany, he increasingly developed into a landscape draftsman and painter, but also created excellent portraits, paintings and illustrations on religious and literary subjects. Passau and Hals , the landscape on the Danube, Inn and Ilz and the Bavarian Forest were his favorite motifs. In addition, he artistically implemented impressions from his travels, for example to Lake Constance.
