The Federal Institute for Agricultural Economics is an agricultural research institute of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management , based in Vienna-Landstrasse.

It was founded in 1960 as the Agricultural Institute and in 1983, when the Federal Act on Federal Agricultural Agencies came into force, it was anchored in law and renamed the Federal Agricultural Institute . Its legally assigned scope includes the area of agriculture from a micro and macroeconomic point of view.

Legal mandate

The legal mandate is:

  • Research in the field of agriculture in Austria with regard to business administration, market and food economics, agricultural policy , agricultural sociology , regional research and regional policy , nature and environmental protection , agricultural statistics as well as international economic integration and global agriculture;
  • Analyzes (quantifications and evaluations) of agricultural policy measures as well as the economic position of the agricultural sector; Observation of the national and international agricultural market and preparation of forecasts about its development; Analysis of regional agricultural structure development as well as the efficiency of agricultural and regional funding;
  • Management of a business competence center in Austria, including preparation of documents for business advice and planning; Creation of agricultural and regional economic models;
  • Participation in the creation of the Green Report

organization structure

The Federal Agency is divided into the directorate and a number of departments. The task of the directorate is the management, as well as the creation, coordination and control of the work and research program of the Federal Institute. She is the editor of publications and participates in cooperation between scientific institutions at home and abroad and represents the Federal Agency at national and international authorities, organizations and institutions.

Since May 2, 2014 Thomas Resl has headed the management of the Federal Office for Agriculture.

Departments

The areas of responsibility are divided into the following departments:

  • The library and documentation department is responsible for managing the agricultural economics library of the Federal Office for Agriculture . It is a publicly accessible, scientific special library for the field of agriculture and takes care of the integration into national library networks and information systems and administers specialist literature and current research results in the IT library catalog OPAC .
  • The department for methodology, data processing and models provides internal mathematical and methodological advice, is responsible for evaluating the methods and carries out applied mathematical and economic studies. Documents, online applications and an extensive range of data are provided for agricultural research and advice.
  • The business administration department creates documents for business advice and planning, as well as the management of farms. It creates profitability calculations for agricultural businesses and carries out business classification. It analyzes and evaluates agricultural policy measures with a microeconomic focus.
  • The Market and Food Economics department analyzes the agricultural markets and agricultural foreign trade and provides forecasts for the cattle and pig markets. It evaluates and prepares industry analyzes in the agricultural processing and marketing area.
  • The department for agricultural policy, rural sociology and regional research creates agricultural, regional and social structure analyzes , as well as models for multifunctionality and integral development of rural areas. It evaluates agricultural policy measures and provides policy impact assessments and determines the sustainability of food systems.
