Federal Lawn Show

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The federal lawn show is an artistic intervention by Ralf Witthaus on the inner green belt in Cologne . The Federal Lawn Show is a temporary art installation, the duration of which is specified from August 9, 2010 to October 1, 2010.

The artistic idea

Ralf Witthaus takes something away where others would plant. The twelve-kilometer-long circular path, of which seven kilometers significantly to the turf drawn leading through the park encourages visitors to stroll. It not only leads around the city: In one direction, it leads the walkers to the artist and his black-suit green workers who clear the way. This creates moments of open communication between artist and strollers. In the other direction the path leads into the park - because the path closes again in a very short time. The dimension of the overall drawing is so large that it cannot be seen as a whole from any point on earth - not even in terms of time. When the circle is closed, only memory remains from its beginning. In addition, the work addresses the importance of the inner green belt , which, through this unusual art experience, becomes recognizable and communicable in its great entirety for a large number of citizens.

The circular path

The circular path drawn in the lawn by Ralf Witthaus begins in the Rheinpark , the location of the Federal Horticultural Show of 1957. After crossing the Rhine , the drawing continues in the sculpture park , continues past the Colonius television tower to near the wholesale market hall . The drawing then again crosses the Rhine at the Südkai. Since there is no continuous green belt on the right bank of the Rhine, the overall circular shape is only shown in the area of the green areas there. The circle is finally completed in the Rheinpark.

criticism

In the media and by some citizens criticism was the project loudly, was suspected since that the city of Cologne, despite the budgetary constraints, the Federal lawn show sponsored by Ralf Witt house. These objections fell silent because this claim is untrue and it was made clear that the city of Cologne ideally supports the project .
