The Federal Association for Prostate Cancer Self-Help (BPS) is a German patient organization with the purpose of advising and caring for cancer patients in the Federal Republic after they have been diagnosed with prostate cancer , as well as representing the interests of these men in the health system and health policy . The German Cancer Aid (DKH) supported the development of the organization with donations.

history

The Federal Association for Prostate Cancer Self-Help was founded in 2000 as an amalgamation of 18 self-help groups. In October 2016, 230 prostate cancer self-help groups in all federal states and nine regional and state associations belonged to it. This makes the BPS the largest organization by and for prostate cancer patients in Europe. It is a concern of the BPS to inform the public about the medical, psychological and social aspects of prostate cancer. This takes place through information work, in lectures and on the Internet through a forum for the exchange of information and experience.

BPS board and membership

The board is elected for four years. He works on a voluntary basis . Only a self-help group consisting of at least three people affected by prostate cancer can become a full member of the BPS. Such a group can apply for membership. The BPS grants its affiliated self-help groups support in the form of financial and material resources. The self-help groups are the mainstay of the BPS.

Association fees are only raised from supporting members of the BPS. The financing, administration and use of the association's assets is regulated by a financial regulation to be adopted by the general assembly.

financing

The BPS is financed by third-party funds , grants from the health insurance companies and private donations. In 2015, the budget was EUR 807,191. Deutsche Krebshilfe contributed the largest item of 750,000 euros. The subsidies from the statutory health insurances amounted to 43,167 euros, the private donations totaled 6,553 euros.

Information work

The information work includes the free distribution of brochures and current leaflets. Information material developed jointly with cooperation partners is also used. Factual information can also be accessed free of charge on the Internet . This also applies to the "BPS-Magazin", which appears three times a year. In addition, a free telephone advice hotline has been set up where experienced active or former self-help group leaders can advise patients.
