Bureau of Ships
The Bureau of Ships ( BuShips ; German ship Office ) of the US Navy was formed by the merger of the Bureau of Construction and Repair and the Bureau of Engineering by June 20, 1940 by the United States Congress law passed. The purpose of the organization was the leadership of Ships Data Book ( Ship Data Book ), a precursor to the Naval Vessel Register of the US Navy. The former head of the Bureau of Engineering RAdm became the head of the organization. Samuel M. Robinson , his deputy becoming the former head of the Bureau of Construction and Repair RAdm. Alexander H. Van Keuren .
On March 9, 1966, the Bureau of Ships was abolished as part of the reorganization of the US Navy bureau system. The successor was the Naval Ship Systems Command , which is now run as Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
