history

In contrast to the neighboring rock castle Neurathen , little is known about the history of this complex. Presumably it was built together with this in the 11th century. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1289. In 1469, Altrathen was razed together with Neurathen .

In 1888 the industrialist Eduard Seifert bought the remains of the castle and rebuilt the complex in neo-Gothic style by 1893 . Only the cellar rooms and parts of the spiral staircase of the keep remain from the medieval castle .

After 1945 the building served as a company holiday home for VEB Brau und Malz in Dresden and later for the State Bank of the GDR . In 1995 the Treuhandanstalt sold the facility to private owners. Since then, the building has been used as a small hotel and restaurant.

The privately owned Burg Altrathen was sold to a new owner residing in Bremen in 2018. He stated that in November 2018 both the public use as a guest house or pension and the permanent accessibility of the castle will end. The castle is to be used privately as a second home, the owner told the regional press, and the site is to be fenced off. For hikers this means that the path leading from Altrathen Castle to the Bastei is interrupted. This is marked as a mountain path (green triangle on a gray background) and was marked as part of the path concept around 15 years ago. This procedure is legally possible because the mountain path is only valid in the forest, say the municipality and the national park administration. A conversation between the national park administration and the owner took place in spring 2019; the owner did not change his mind. The national park administration has to dismantle the mountain path and delete it from the network of trails.
