Brotterode Castle

The Castle Brotterode is an Outbound high medieval fortification on a projecting south into the valley spur in Brotterode in Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringian Forest .

location

The castle site of the Spornburg is located on the western outskirts on the castle hill at 591  m above sea level. NN . It can be reached quickly from there via signposted paths. The area extends under forest in the summit.

description

The facility was secured on three sides by a partly natural steep drop and in the north by a wall and ditch fortification that can still be seen; the steep drop to the south is still recognizable as a rock massif. The extension in north-south direction is 150 m, in east-west direction 15 to 30 m. The core of the complex (residential development) presumably used the southern part of the summit plateau. A small plateau measuring 20 × 25 m is bordered by a faintly recognizable protective wall in the east and north; today there is a rest area at the same place. Occasionally you come across small remains of a pit that were probably used as a quarry.

history

Northern trench
Inner rampage

The castle was mentioned as a fortification of the Thuringian landgraves and is said to have been built around 1050. Its construction time, use and destruction are directly related to the expansion of the landgrave's position of power on the Rennsteig, in particular to the protection of early mines. The castle site is now a protected ground monument . The area in question is used for forestry.
