The Erichsberg Castle , now called Erichsburg , is the small remnant of a medieval hilltop castle on a rock on the historic Beckstrasse am Ramberg in the Harz Mountains . The castle area is located in the Gernrode district of the city of Quedlinburg near the Friedrichsbrunn district of the city of Thale .

history

Count Heinrich zu Stolberg bought in 1320 from Heineke von Hoym and Bertholdus II. Von Arnswald, called Geylvus (today Geilfuss / Geilfuß), the fortified house zum Erichsberg, first mentioned in the 12th century, together with accessories, probably built to protect a trade route. In order to secure the new goods, he made them a fiefdom to the Bishop of Halberstadt in 1325, together with the Wolfsberg Castle, which was acquired around the same time .

Count Heinrich zu Stolberg left Erichsberg to his cousin Hermann, who kept mercenaries on the Erichsberg house who damaged the Thuringian region and in particular the Counts of Hohnstein zu Sondershausen. As a result, Margrave Friedrich is said to have moved in front of the castle together with the citizens of Erfurt, Mühlhausen and Nordhausen in 1346, captured the Stolberg count and destroyed the castle complex. Erichsberg was not allowed to be rebuilt. The ruins were later added to the Bärenrode office of Stolberg .

A few small remains of the walls and small parts of the former ramparts and the moat can still be seen from the former castle .
