Forchtenberg Castle

The Forchtenberg castle ruins are located in the municipality of Semriach in Styria . The time of their construction is not known.

location

The ruins of the Spornburg are in the cadastral community of Windhof . It stands on a spur that extends in the direction of the excavation, about 300 meters northeast of the Luegg ruins . The spur is only a few meters wide at its shoulder and slopes steeply on both sides. At the end of the spur there were two neck trenches that are still clearly recognizable today , one of which is about ten meters wide and about eight meters deep. A forest path now runs through this ditch.

description

Today there are only a few remains of the castle. An approximate reconstruction of the floor plan is possible with the help of remains of the foundation wall. The original triangular, now preserved as a mound keep had with a wall thickness of about two meters a side length of about 14.5 meters. The large castle area connected to the keep. It was surrounded by an irregularly square curtain wall over a length of 30 meters and a width of 15 meters . Of this, an approximately two-meter-long piece of the outer wall shell and some remains of the infill masonry have been preserved. The wall consisted of about 30 × 40 centimeters large rubble stones without any pronounced layering. A flank gate could have been between the keep and the southern part of the curtain wall. In the eastern and southern parts of the complex there are elevations that indicate former buildings.
