The Burg Gallery in the Volkspark was opened in the Volkspark Halle in 2000 as a public exhibition space for the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle . The university gallery is an experience and action space for students to learn and try out exhibiting as a practice and to develop different forms of communication. Furthermore, it enables interdisciplinary collaboration and discourse between the two faculties of art and design. The exchange with other art colleges and networks is also continuously maintained and the resulting results are presented. Up to six exhibitions with works and productions by students, alumni and / or teachers from all disciplines are shown each year. The Burg Galerie is located on the ground floor of the Volkspark Halle . The exhibitions are shown in two rooms (195 and 150 sqm) on the ground floor, optionally two small multi-purpose rooms, which are located between the gallery rooms, can be included.

Focus

In the Burg Galerie in the Volkspark, artistic and creative works and projects are presented to the public. In the course of the two decades, certain recurring exhibition formats have established themselves in the Burg Galerie in the Volkspark. This includes the class exhibitions from the art department and, since 2009, the presentation of the work of scholarship holders of the state of Saxony-Anhalt's graduate support. In addition, at the annual exhibition of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, part of the diploma theses by students from the art department is shown in the gallery every year in July under the title “Parcours”. At the same time, the Burg Galerie is responding to current issues and social and artistic processes with new formats. With exhibition series such as “TEXT” or “ABC”, relevant topics are proposed in open calls, all students can apply for them (2019: A for everyday life, 2020: S for city). Mediation plays a special role in gallery work. There are accompanying events such as panel discussions, readings, talks with the exhibiting artists and guided tours. New experimental communication formats such as performances or participatory forms of exchange with the audience are also developed, often in cooperation with the art education courses.

history

As early as the 1920s, the art college was running a sales gallery in the redevelopment of the Red Tower on the market square in Halle (Saale). In May 1975, a castle-owned gallery opened, for the first time with the name Burg-Galerie, at Leipziger Strasse 47. There, mainly products from the production facilities and also small series and individual items from the workshops were offered for sale. A second castle gallery was set up in Magdeburg in 1979 under the same concept. After the association of production companies was dissolved after 1990, the Burg-Galerie in Halle also closed in 1991, the Burg-Galerie in Magdeburg was privatized and continued until 2020. In 1997, the university's own gallery CharlottenBurg opened for one year in the Charlottencenter (Charlottenstraße 8) in the upper shopping arcade, shop number 18 in Halle. Three years later, under the direction of Ludwig Ehrler, the art college set up the exhibition rooms in the Volkspark in the spring of 2000. The first exhibition opening in the Burg Galerie in the Volkspark took place on June 28, 2000. In the exhibition "Reflekt - Labor Art and Media", various media works by students from the field of art and media under the supervision of Ute Hörner were shown. In 2011 the position of a curator was created. Since then, the gallery's program has been developed in dialogue with the university management. During its existence, from July 2015 to June 2018, the Burg Galerie im Volkspark was a member of the Federal Association of University Galleries, a horizontally organized network for the exchange of exhibition activities between galleries at art universities. During this period, the association's conferences and exhibitions took place in Halle (Saale), Berlin, Saarbrücken and Stuttgart. With its 20th anniversary, over 130 exhibitions have been shown.
