The castle Garz is located on the east side of the former manor in the same place in the Temnitz -Niederung. Garz belongs to the municipality of Temnitztal in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in Brandenburg . The estate is a listed building.
history
The village of Garz was first mentioned in a document in 1364, but it is likely to be much older. Presumably it was laid out in the first decade of the 13th century on a Slavic settlement. The name could be derived from the Slavic gard or gord for castle.
Whether the village was owned by the von Quast family when it was founded has not been conclusively clarified. The Lords of Quast are documented in Garz from 1419 in various branches. The best-known representative of the family is probably Albrecht Christoph von Quast (1613–1669). He was sergeant-general and governor of the Spandau Fortress .
Probably in the 13th century, the Lords of Quast built a stone residential tower that was used for residential purposes well into the 17th century. With the construction of a new mansion around 1705, the tower lost its importance and was subsequently mainly used as a warehouse. In 1945 the von Quast family was expropriated.
investment
The almost square residential tower with walls up to 1.40 meters thick is made of field stones and bricks . It is about 11 meters high. On one side stands a polygonal lattice stair tower built in 1681.
The completely preserved residential tower, which was originally probably surrounded by ditches and a palisade, is a unique testimony to a medieval village castle of lower nobility.
