Grafenweiden Castle

The Viscount pastures is the ruin of a lowland castle in the park of Castle Niederweiden in Engelhartstetten in March Field in District Gänserndorf ( Lower Austria )

location

The castle was built to monitor the ford over the March on the one hand and the Amber Road on the other . At the same time, like many other castles in eastern Austria, it was intended to protect against the constant threats from the east.

history

The castle was built as a refuge and was first mentioned in a document in 1337. It probably also played a role in the Battle of Dürnkrut , from which Rudolph von Habsburg emerged victorious.

In 1412 the castle was given to the Pottendorfer and in 1433 to the Kuenringer as a fief. The next lord of the castle was Lienhart Arberger, who, together with Pankratz von Halicz, plundered the area until Count Ullrich von Cilli put an end to these raids. The castle, however, began to deteriorate and was called the deserted fortress . In 1637 the whole area went to Count Hans Ulrich Concin von Penne, who sold it to Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg .

Starhemberg then had the famous Niederweiden Castle built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach .

investment

The castle had a rampart , of which only remnants are visible today, 750 by 400 meters. It was surrounded by a double moat, the inner one being up to twenty meters wide. The outer one wasn't that wide, but a lot deeper. The castle hill in the flat area was twenty by twenty meters, on which stood a tower-like building.
