Hukvaldy Castle (German Hochwald ) is located in the Palkovické hůrky southeast of Hukvaldy on a hill above the Ondřejnice valley in the Okres Frýdek-Místek , Czech Republic .

history

Hukeswagh Castle was built around the middle of the 13th century by the Counts of Hückeswagen , who also owned the nearby Starý Jičín Castle . The first mention of it comes from the year 1285. Since the middle of the 14th century the bishops of Olomouc built the castle into a fortress . Due to financial difficulties, the Olomouc bishops had to pledge and sell the Hukenwald Castle repeatedly, but were able to buy it back again and again. It withstood the blockade by Danes and Swedes in the Thirty Years War and was never conquered. The greatest weakness of the castle was water shortage: it was not until 1581 that a castle well was drilled inside the castle , which was 150 meters deep and equipped with a bucket wheel operated by humans . In 1738 the device burned down, which initiated the decline of the castle. In 1760 the Demeritenhaus was relocated to the Mürau fortress and the manorial offices to the village of Hochwald . The general prison was preserved, the vacated premises were converted into apartments for officials. On October 5, 1762, the newly built officials' apartments burned down completely; The archive and registry of the Hochwald rulership were also lost. After the major fire, the castle was finally abandoned and left to decay. Today it is one of the largest castle ruins in Moravia .

The only functional building in the castle area is the St. Andreas Chapel, which was restored in the 19th century and is still used for concerts today because of its excellent acoustics. An annual international music festival has been held here since 1994 in honor of the composer Leoš Janáček , who comes from the nearby village of Hukvaldy.
