The Okres Frýdek-Místek (German Friedeck-Mistek District ) is a regional authority in the Moravskoslezský kraj ( Moravian Silesia ) in the Czech Republic . (The Okresy were roughly comparable to the districts in Germany; the district administrations were dissolved on December 31, 2002.)
The district is located in the north-east of Moravia in the border triangle with Poland and Slovakia . It stretches from the Upper Silesian coalfield to the Beskids . In the former Okres Frýdek-Místek, 214,187 people (as of January 1, 2019) live in 72 municipalities (Obec), five of which are towns.
The Okres is an industrial and mining area, but also has a high density of forest; about half of the area consists of deciduous and coniferous forest; this is one of the highest values in the Czech Republic. There are two nature reserves ( Beskydy , Poodří ), 18 nature reserves and 19 natural monuments in the area.
Heavy industry was an economic leader until the 1990s. As a result of restructuring and closings, unemployment increased, which doubled within a very short time and is now one of the ten highest in the republic. A realignment of the economy should bring relief. Among other things, commercial areas are designated, trading centers are being built and housing construction is being promoted.
Okres Frýdek-Místek is a holiday region due to its distinctive landscape and numerous historical monuments.
