The Okres Karviná (German Karwin District ) was a regional authority in Moravskoslezský kraj in the Czech Republic . The Okresy were roughly comparable with the districts in Germany, the district administrations were dissolved on December 31, 2002.
The area is very small with 356 km² and is located in the north-east of Moravia and includes the industrial area on the Olsa, east of Ostrava (Ostrau). In Okres Karviná, 247,887 people (as of January 1, 2019) live in 17 municipalities (Obec), of which 7 are cities.
Since 1776, most of the district lived from coal mining, to which coke plants, steel production and the chemical industry were added in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the second half of the 20th century, heavy industry was expanded, and the demand for labor led to high levels of immigration. New cities and settlements emerged. In the 1990s, large heavy industry operations were shut down and closed. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and the leather industry could not compensate for the capacities that were released. The designation of new industrial centers and the establishment of new trading structures and service companies could not compensate for the job losses. Unemployment is among the highest in the Czech Republic.
There are 36,000 companies in the region, of which industry is still the most important. The average gross salary is still among the 15 highest in the Czech Republic, despite the high unemployment.
