Location of the Okres Ostrava-město

Okres Ostrava-město (German district of Ostrau-Stadt ) is one of the most densely populated industrial centers in the Czech Republic ( Moravskoslezský kraj ) with a high level of education. The largest city, Ostrava, is also the county seat.

The area on the Jantarova stezka ( Amber Road ) trade route was settled in the 13th century. With 332 km² it is one of the smallest districts in the Czech Republic. 40% of the area can be used for agriculture, a tenth is forested and about the same part is populated.

After the discovery of hard coal in 1763, heavy industry grew and the need for workers attracted many families to the region. At the beginning of the 1990s, large farms with their monostructure were dismantled and dissolved. Raw material extraction is still carried out by two companies today, the chemical industry, mechanical engineering, wood processing, textile and food industries are still well represented. A total of 60,000 companies are registered. The pollution, the worst in the whole of the Czech Republic due to air pollution, has decreased, but sewage and soil pollution are still a major problem. The restructuring was not able to absorb all the workers who became vacant. At 16%, unemployment is among the highest in the republic.

In the region there are protected nature areas Poodří , Polanská niva and Polanský les as well as the nature reserve Rezavka Rybník Štěpán and the natural monument Turkov . Tourism is to be stimulated through numerous festivals and cultural events. The proximity of the Beskydy and the Jeseníky Mountains should also be used more to promote tourism. Other facilities for visitors to the "Okres" include an 18-hole golf course in Šilheřovicíce , technical monuments in Ostrava, such as the mining museum, the Michael mine etc. a.

The annual 112,000 visitors are accommodated in 31 accommodations, the average length of stay is 3.4 days.

Until December 31, 2006, the district consisted exclusively of the statutory city of Ostrava. After the incorporation of surrounding places from the Okres Opava , Okres Frýdek-Místek and Okres Nový Jičín , it has included 13 municipalities since 2007, including 4 cities.
