history
The place was created at the end of the 13th century during the colonization of the area by the Olomouc bishop Theoderich von Neuhaus . To protect the episcopal territory on the Ostrawitza , which formed the border with the Duchy of Teschen , an episcopal fortress was built to the left of the river, around which the settlement developed. Until 1581 Friedland was part of the Friedberg rule and then came under the Hochwald rule . In 1580 the St. Bartholomew Church was consecrated. Iron hammers were used on the Ostrawitza to process ore from the Beskydy mountains. The episcopal ironworks was built in 1618. During the Thirty Years War the place suffered great damage. The residents of the settlement were released from their robot services for the Friedecker Hof on May 7, 1625 in order to promote the ironworks.
After the elevation to the parish church, the wooden Bartholomäus church was converted into a stone church between 1672 and 1690. Friedland developed into a well-known iron smelting location. In addition, the paper factory was established in the second half of the 17th century. With the beginning of industrialization in the course of the 18th century, the character of the place changed from a small settlement consisting mainly of wooden houses to a center of the mining industry. In 1777 Friedland was made a market. After the abolition of patrimonial Friedland became an independent market town in 1848 and at that time already had 2802 inhabitants. On January 3, 1871, after two years of construction, the line of the kk priv. Ostrau-Friedlander Eisenbahn from Mährisch Ostrau to Friedland was inaugurated, with which the market was connected to the Emperor Ferdinand's Northern Railway . In addition to the traditional metallurgy, art casting , iron casting, enamel dishes and mechanical engineering products were manufactured in Friedland .
Archbishop Friedrich Egon von Fürstenberg built the Borromean nunnery in 1871 , to which a daughter school for archbishop employees and foresters was attached. In 1886 the church burned down. In 1891 Friedland had 2,709 inhabitants. In 1913 the Archbishop's ironworks were leased to the newly founded Ferrum AG and later part of the Witkowitz ironworks . The seat of the court and seat of the political district was in Mistek . In the 1920s, the previous place name Frýdlant u Místku was changed to Frýdlant nad Ostravicí .
On October 12, 1948 Frýdlant was raised to the city. Between 1949 the town belonged to the Okres Frenštát, which was dissolved in the course of the territorial reform, and then came to the Okres Frýdek-Místek .
