Ostravice (German Ostrawitz ) is a municipality in the Frýdek-Místek district in the Czech Republic . It lies on the river Ostravice and at the foot of the highest mountain of the Moravian-Silesian Beskid - the Kahlenberg (Lysa hora) and the Smrks . Both mountains are symbolically depicted in the municipal coat of arms. Ostravice is an important recreational center with most of the family houses and buildings in the region. About 2300 people live here.
history
The first written mention of it comes from 1581. The emergence of Ostravice is closely related to the local mountain colonization on cleared forest soil in the 15th to 18th centuries. The wood was used for construction and made into charcoal, and in 1858 a large sawmill was put into operation. In addition, iron ore was found in Ostravice and processed in hammer mills until 1926 . The railway connection with Frýdlant nad Ostravicí has existed since 1905, and Ostravice has been the terminus since the construction of the Šance-istečice reservoir . In the course of the centuries the area of the municipality expanded (approx. 28.98 km²) and until 1951 it was one of the largest in Czechoslovakia .
The Catholic Trinity Church in the baroque style (1789) has partly the equipment of the closed Augustinian monastery church in Fulnek , the Protestant church was built in 1874. The Silesian poet Petr Bezruč spent every summer in his log cabin in the northern part of the village .
