Smrk (German: Smrk-Berg ) is with 1276 mnm after Lysá hora the second highest mountain of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids . It lies between Ostravice and Čeladná in the north and Staré Hamry and the Šance dam in the southeast. The massif also includes some smaller peaks: Malý Smrček (711 mnm), Smrček (858 mnm) and Malý Smrk (1174 mnm). A crag protrudes near the main summit.

The Smrk is easily accessible via marked hiking trails, but there are no buildings or hotels in the upper areas . A summit book is deposited at the highest point .

Landscape and nature conservation

The Smrk belongs to the flysch zone of the Western Carpathians. The mountain range is covered by spruce forests with admixture of beech and fir trees . The name of the mountain is also derived from the Che. Name of the tree species from spruce . In places come rowan and sycamore ago. In the herb layer, riding grass, ferns and blueberries are predominant. Despite strict protection, the Smrk massif is one of the attractive blueberry collecting regions in the Beskids. In the past, the summit sections were severely damaged by immissions . The north slope was cleared in the 1980s.

The remote, extensive mountain range offers favorable conditions for animal species that are sensitive to disturbances in their habitat. For example, the capercaillie , the Ural owl and the Eurasian lynx are native here . The Bučací vodopády cascading waterfalls are located in the basin of the Bučací potok brook , at an altitude of about 880 m . They are a total of 40 meters long and are among the largest in this part of the Carpathian Mountains. The area around the cascade falls was declared a nature reserve on 35 hectares in 2004. Other protected areas in the Smrk massif are the nature reserves Smrk (341 ha), Malý Smrk (106 ha), Studenčany (53 ha) and on the southern edge the nature reserve V Podolánkách (32 ha). The reserves were created between 1996 and 2004.

Monuments

After 1968 monuments to Jan Palach and John Lennon were erected on the ridge of the Smrk . The mountain became the meeting point of the local dissident scene of the time. In 2004 a stone memorial for the hockey coach Ivan Hlinka was added.

Tourist routes

Three marked tourist routes lead into the mountain range: the main route from Ostravice to Čeladná (red), from Bílá via Staré Hamry to Malý Smrk (blue) and from the Šance dam (yellow). The waterfalls at Bučací potok can be reached via an unmarked forest path.

Winter sports

There are no controlled ski slopes on the Smrk ; the slopes and valleys of the mountain streams are used for deep snow skiing . On January 25, 2006, an avalanche buried a skier. It was the first known Lavine in the Czech part of the Beskydy Mountains to claim a fatality.
