The Šance dam ( 500 m nm ) is located not far from the origin of the Ostravice river in the cadastral area of the Staré Hamry municipality ( Czech Republic ) in the valley at the foot of the highest mountains of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids , Smrk and Lysá hora . The reservoir serves as a drinking water reservoir for the city of Ostrava , so swimming in it is prohibited. The dam extends in the valleys of the Ostravice and its tributary Řečice.
The dam was built between 1964 and 1969 as a flood protection facility. It is named after the Šance (575 m) mountain spur located in the bend of the river opposite the confluence of the Řečice, which today lies largely below the water level. The center of Staré Hamry and the railway line Ostravice - Bílá of the Friedland – Bila local railway also disappeared under the water surface . The storage space extends to the Gruň .
